What is Vivistim?
The Vivistim is a device placed under the skin that stimulates the vagus nerve during task-specific therapy to increase neuroplasticity. It helps to reduce upper extremity motor deficits and improve function in chronic ischemic stroke patients with moderate to severe arm impairment.
Who is a candidate for Vivistim?
- Adult surgical candidates, 22 years and older
- Chronic ischemic stroke survivor (typically 6+ months)
- Moderate to severe upper extremity impairment
- must have active motion of wrist and digits, spasticity is ok if controlled enough to complete therapy, severe sensory deficits may hinder patient’s ability to perform rehabilitation tasks
- Willing and able to complete therapy
Facts:
- Vivistim is FDA approved for Stroke and has been used for over 25 years for other medical conditions
- The device and lead are placed under the skin of the chest and neck, through 2 small incisions, during a same-day outpatient procedure
- The device can be removed at any time during an outpatient procedure
- The battery is expected to last approximately 5 years
- Most users do not feel the stimulation
- This device is off until the clinician/therapist activates it during therapy. Users can also activate it for 30-minute sessions at home by using the magnet.
