Temperature Sensitivity & Multiple Sclerosis
Are you sensitive to heat?
Heat sensitivity is something that is common among individuals with Multiple Sclerosis (MS). Heat and humidity can often increase MS related symptoms. Elevation in body temperature can lead to temporary changes such as increased muscle weakness, fatigue, and visual disturbances. Symptoms often resolve once body temperature lowers and does not cause increased disease progression. Heat and humidity impair the passage of nerve impulses in demyelinated nerves.
Keeping the body cool can decrease the negative effects of heat and humidity and often improve your ability to tolerate a warm day, exercise, work and enjoy outdoor activities!
How to keep cool:
Cooling vests - garments that often contain insulated pockets which contain small ice packs to cool the body.
Neck wraps, wristbands, hats
Cool environments – Keeping your home well air conditioned will improve symptoms at home and exercising in a cool environment can increase tolerance to exercise. When exercising outside it is recommended to do so in the mornings or evening. Exercising in a pool that is <85 degrees is another option to improve exercise tolerance.
Cool Liquid – when exercising or in hot environment have cool fluids on hand
Avoid extremes: It is recommended for individuals with MS who are sensitive to temperature to try to avoid extremes. Cooler temperatures can alter symptoms as well, such as spasticity.
